Hugh Hamilton was born in Simla, India in 1929. He studied forestry at Oxford and in 1955 he emigrated to British Columbia. He worked for three years with MacMillan Bloedel on Vancouver Island, before moving to the Interior to work with Netherlands Overseas Mills Ltd. where he became Chief Forester. He started his own consulting forestry company in 1972, Hugh Hamilton Ltd. and retired in 1996. Following retirement, he joined the West Vancouver Streamkeepers in 1990 and still works with them. He later joined Nature Vancouver and worked on their Camp Committee and has since joined most of their summer alpine camps. In 2007 he joined the Old Growth Conservancy Society and currently holds the position of President.
